The society exists to promote an interest, not only in the local history of Thatcham and district, but also in historical matters in general.
History of Thames Valley Police Force
A packed room greeted Ken Wells, curator of the Thames Valley Police Museum, on Monday evening (15th October). Mr Wells gave a talk entitled “History of Thames Valley Police Force.” Mr Wells gave a brief overview of his background, noting the fact that he failed to get into certain police forces due to height restrictions. Mr Wells eventually joined the Metropolitan Police Force and served in various districts including Hammersmith. He also server within the Mounted Police division.
Aspects of Berkshire's History: a day school
Berkshire Local History Association is hosting a day school "Aspects of Berkshire's History" on 3rd November 2007, 10.00 am to 4.30 pm at the Museum of English Rural Life, Redlands Road, Reading. Fee £10 including coffee, light lunch and tea.

The Living Landscape Guided Walk
Sunday 18th November 11am – 3.00pm. Celebrate the start of Winter with this 6.5 mile guided circular walk from the Nature Discovery Centre at Thatcham up to Greenham Common for a picnic lunch and back via a different route.
Festival of the Arts
On Saturday, 6th October 2007, the society took part in the Thatcham Festival of the Arts to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the society. The event was organised by committee member Alf Wheeler and exhibition material by Dr Nick Young. St Mary's Church kindly loaned the Baptism and Mariage registers, Peter Allen also supplied newspaper material from 1967.
New Website
A new website for the society went live on Monday, 8th October 2007. The new site has been set-up to allow for new features to be included and to solve various issues with our email system. The new site includes a search feature and an event tracker on the sidebar.
Other features will be added over time including a database of monumental inscriptions, question and answer section, oral history recordings, etc. If you have any problems with this site or suggestions please contact us through our contact page.
