Today's talk on the "history and future of Greenham Common" proved to be extremly popular with over 60 people attending.
The first talk, given by Jonathan Sayers, looked at the history of Greenham Common. Jonathan noted that a military base was located on Greenham Common in 1740, as depicted on maps of the time. In the 1860’s, the common was the usual place for military men to rest whilst travelling to Salisbury Plane.
The society exists to promote an interest, not only in the local history of Thatcham and district, but also in historical matters in general.

Tue 26th Apr 2011 | by NickDue to various events in April, Thatcham Historical Society was unable to hold their normal Monday evening speaker meeting. Instead we held a special Civil War event on Saturday 16th April.
The first of the two part event saw author Chris Scott present "The First Battle of Newbury." Chris noted that Newbury was the crossroads of Southern England. It is know that the royalists were camped in Victoria Park, however the town supported the Parliamentarians and did not want the Royalists camped nearby.
