Ramesses the Great

Speaker(s):
Beth Astbury
Date:
Monday, October 20, 2014 - 7:30pm
This speaker event fell during the Thatcham Festival of the Arts. The speaker, from Thames Valley Ancient Egypt Society, gave a fascinating and detailed talk on one of the most well known Pharoahs, the long lived Ramesses the Great, Pharoah of the Abu Simbel temples, with the theme – Was he really Great? Beth Astbury guided us through his life via his temples, the art which celebrated him, and his tomb.

Members day: WWI Remembered

Date:
Monday, September 29, 2014 - 7:30pm
This was a departure from the Society’s normal speaker programme, as we asked members to bring along mementoes from their family’s WW1 history, and to speak about family members or family friends who had taken part in the war. There was an overwhelming response, with more information and artefacts than everyone could look at during the evening, as well as some fascinating family stories, and hopefully this is an event to repeat in the next few years as the war is remembered on its 100th anniversary, as there are more stories to be discovered.
