I am researching the family of Edward Howard, he was my ggg grandfather and have searched the census records from 1841 to 1891 for Edward Howard.  I was surprised to uncover that after Emily’s death the following census (1871) lists Edward Howard’s spouse as Elizabeth but I cannot find a marriage listed.  From the details provided on this site it states that Edward is buried with Emily.  Do you have any further information about Elizabeth, born in Old Basing, Hampshire, 1816?  Any details would be gratefully received.

My gg grandfather also grew up in Thatcham and I believe he was a vet.  My mother says that he used to look after the horses on an estate, I think it was Lord Canarvon’s estate Highclere.  He also looked after the dog for the local hunt.

Edward & Emily Howard had the following children:

  • Edward Curtis Howard, born 1856, Thatcham, my great grandfather, the Vet!
  • Elizabeth Howard, born 1848, Reading
  • Jane Howard, born 1850, Reading
  • Sarah Howard born 1852, Thatcham
  • Matthew Howard born 1857 Thatcham

I also have a Mary Iliff Howard born in 1862 Thatcham, Berkshire who appears on the 1871 census as daughter.  This census shows Elizabeth Howard as wife to Edward Howard.  I assume that Mary was a daughter of Edward & Emily.

If you can shed any light on the mystery of Elizabeth I would really appreciate it & thanks for all your help so far.

Thank you very much
Regards
Liz
