RAF Greenham Common & beyond
The Society had a good start to 2024 with a well attended AGM in January,
and followed this in February with an excellent talk by Jonathan Sayers on
RAF Greenham Common. This explored the use of the site as an airbase prior to, and during, WW2 – when the gliders used for the Normandy Landings on D-Day, and also for the unsuccessful and ultimately disastrous Operation Market Garden, were assembled, stored and launched at the site. Jonathan Sayers is a local historian who runs a website on RAF Greenham Common, and he was able to repent a fascinating montage of photos covering the history of the site.
In March Dr Lionel Williams gave a talk on the history of the Reading hospitals, from the 1100’s up to the present day, covering the development of hospitals though the ages, including the more modern development and
expansion of the Royal Berkshire Hospital.
We have many more fascinating talks, take a look at our events page for more details.
